Bengaluru is celebrated as a city of innovation, education, and sporting excellence. Long before it became India's technology capital, the city's sporting identity was shaped by a handful of pioneering institutions that nurtured talent and promoted organised sport. Among these, Devanga Union, Cubbonpet, Bengaluru, occupies a place of exceptional historical significance. It has served not only as a centre for social, cultural, and community activities but also as one of Bengaluru's pioneering institutions in the promotion of organised sports. Its contribution to basketball, wrestling, kabaddi, and physical culture has played a vital role in shaping Karnataka's sporting culture.

The history of basketball in India is closely intertwined with the work of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), whose centres played a pioneering role in introducing and promoting the game across the country during the early twentieth century. Many of India's earliest basketball courts were established by the YMCA, serving as centres for coaching, competition, and community engagement.

Among these, the YMCA Basketball Court at Secunderabad, Telangana, established in 1916, is widely regarded as the oldest continuously functioning basketball court in India. Other historic YMCA centres, including those in Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai, also played significant roles in the early spread of basketball. However, precise documentation regarding the uninterrupted functioning of their original courts is limited.

Within Karnataka, the Devanga Union Basketball Court, Bengaluru, established in 1946, occupies a place of exceptional historical importance. Situated in Bengaluru's Central Business District,it is among the oldest surviving and continuously functioning basketball courts in India. For nearly eight decades, the court has nurtured generations of players, produced state, national, and international representatives, and has remained a vibrant centre of grassroots basketball. Its uninterrupted sporting legacy makes it one of the country's most significant heritage basketball venues.

Although the YMCA Secunderabad court predates it by three decades, the Devanga Union Basketball Court stands as one of India's oldest club basketball courts still in active use. Its enduring contribution to the growth of basketball in Karnataka and India underscores its importance as a living sporting heritage deserving of recognition and preservation for future generations.

Devanga Union reached even greater heights under the visionary leadership of Professor N. C. Parappa, whose dedication transformed the club into one of Karnataka's foremost basketball centres. His exceptional coaching, administration, and commitment to youth development produced generations of players who represented the state and the nation with distinction. Beyond sporting success, instilled discipline, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a lifelong passion for physical activity.

The contributions of Devanga Union extends far beyond medals and championships. It reflects an enduring spirit of volunteerism, community service, and social responsibility. For generations, the Club has nurtured young people, strengthened communities, and preserved a unique sporting culture that forms an integral part of Bengaluru's social history.

Today, as Bengaluru continues to expand and modernise, many historic sporting institutions face the risk of being forgotten. Once these institutions and their stories are lost, they cannot be recreated. Preserving them is not merely about protecting old buildings; it is about safeguarding the values, achievements, memories, and traditions that define the city's sporting heritage.

Declaring Devanga Union a Heritage Sporting Institution would honour the vision of its founders, the dedication of its administrators, the achievements of its athletes, and the selfless service of countless coaches, volunteers, and community leaders who built an enduring sporting tradition.

Heritage recognition would also:

1.Preserve one of Bengaluru's oldest and most influential sporting institutions.
2.Honour generations of athletes, coaches, administrators, and volunteers.
3.Encourage the establishment of a Sports Heritage Museum and Archive for students, researchers, historians, and sports enthusiasts.
4.Promote public awareness of Bengaluru's rich sporting history and encourage sports heritage tourism.
5.Inspire future generations to value, preserve, and strengthen the city's sporting legacy.

We therefore call upon the Government of Karnataka, the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, the Greater Bengaluru Authority, heritage conservation organisations, sports associations, historians, educational institutions, former athletes, community organisations, and the citizens of Bengaluru to work together in recognising and preserving this historic institution. Honouring Devanga Union is not merely a tribute to the residents of Cubbonpet. It is a celebration of Bengaluru's rich sporting heritage and its invaluable contribution to Indian sport.

This movement is about more than preserving one institution. It is about safeguarding the history of organised sport in Bengaluru and ensuring that future generations understand the sacrifices, vision, and dedication of those who laid its foundations. The story of Devanga Union is a testament to perseverance, community spirit, volunteerism, and sporting excellence. It deserves to be preserved, celebrated, and protected.
