Basketball: From Springfield to Cubbonpet (Bengaluru) Part Two
Chapter Six
Promoting Grassroots Basketball and Developing Future Champions
The lasting success of any sporting institution depends not only on the achievements of its elite athletes but also on its commitment to nurturing young talent. Recognising this fundamental principle, Professor N. C. Parappa devoted much of his career to the systematic development of grassroots basketball. His vision extended far beyond winning championships; he believed that introducing children to sport at an early age would build healthier individuals, stronger communities, and a brighter future for Indian basketball.
During the 1960s, while serving as Principal of the Government College of Physical Education at Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, Professor Parappa pioneered organised basketball competitions for schoolchildren and college students as part of the Independence Day Sports and Games Celebrations. At a time when structured opportunities for young basketball players were limited, these tournaments provided many students with their first experience of organised competition. They laid the foundation for the systematic growth of school and collegiate basketball in Bengaluru and inspired numerous young players to pursue the sport seriously.
Professor Parappa firmly believed that schools and colleges formed the backbone of any successful sporting system. He encouraged physical education teachers to identify promising youngsters, provide scientific coaching, and instil the values of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship from an early age. His efforts helped create a strong pathway through which talented players progressed from schools to colleges, clubs, state teams, and ultimately to national representation.
His commitment to youth development continued through his association with the Lions Club of Bangalore (Host). As Chairman of the Boys and Girls Committee, he worked tirelessly to expand competitive opportunities for schoolchildren. Under his leadership, the Lions Club of Bangalore Inter-High School Basketball Tournament for the Y. H. Venkataramanappa Rolling Trophy and the K. Gangadhar Memorial Basketball Tournament were established at the Devanga Union Sports Club.
These prestigious tournaments soon became annual highlights of Bengaluru's sporting calendar. They attracted leading schools from across the city and served as important talent-identification platforms for college coaches and state selectors. Many young players who first competed in these tournaments later went on to represent Karnataka and India, demonstrating the lasting impact of Professor Parappa's vision for grassroots basketball.
Beyond organising competitions, Professor Parappa envisioned creating a Devanga School of Sports—a forward-looking institution that would combine scientific coaching, physical education, academic support, and character development. Although this ambitious vision was never fully realised, it reflected his progressive understanding that sporting excellence required systematic training, qualified coaching, and holistic education.
Another landmark achievement during this period was the formation of the Devanga Union Women's Basketball Team. At a time when opportunities for women in organised sport were limited, the club demonstrated remarkable foresight by encouraging girls to participate in competitive basketball. Guided by Professor Parappa and supported by dedicated administrators and patrons including: G. S. Nagaraj, T. Sankappa, K. Chandraiah, H. Rajanna, Dr. R. Dhanapal, and Smt. Swaroop Seetaramaiah, the women's team became a symbol of opportunity, empowerment, and social progress. Their efforts encouraged greater participation by young women and strengthened the development of women's basketball in Karnataka.
Professor Parappa also recognised that the long-term growth of basketball depended upon producing well-qualified coaches. As a member of the inaugural batch of wrestling coaches trained at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, in 1961, he appreciated the importance of scientific coaching and professional education. Although his formal certification was in wrestling, his knowledge and experience enabled him to mentor aspiring basketball coaches and encourage them to obtain professional coaching qualifications.
Under his guidance, several members of the Devanga Union successfully completed coaching programmes at the National Institute of Sports. Among the distinguished NIS-certified basketball coaches associated with the club were S. Narayana, K. Narayana, Sri Om Shankar, B. Muniyappa, Sri R. Jayaram, S. G. Siddarangappa, Sri Subramanian, and Sri D. Sangappa. Together, they created a strong coaching network that ensured the club's traditions and technical excellence were passed on to future generations.
The influence of these coaches extended far beyond the Devanga Union. Many served schools, colleges, universities, public sector organisations, and sports associations throughout Karnataka, helping to raise the overall standard of basketball across the State. Their work demonstrated Professor Parappa's belief that coaching was not merely about teaching skills but about shaping character, inspiring confidence, and preparing young people for leadership both on and off the court.
By the end of this period, the Devanga Union Sports Club had established a comprehensive system for player development that encompassed grassroots participation, school competitions, women's basketball, coach education, and community involvement. This integrated approach ensured that the club remained a vibrant centre of basketball excellence while continuing to contribute significantly to the growth of the sport in Bengaluru and Karnataka.
The legacy of these initiatives continues to be felt today. The generations of players, coaches, and administrators nurtured through Professor N. C. Parappa's vision stand as enduring testimony to his conviction that the true measure of a sporting institution lies not only in the championships it wins, but also in the lives it transforms.
Chapter Seven
Academic Leadership, Infrastructure Development, and Community Service
The history of the Devanga Union Sports Club is not merely the story of outstanding players and memorable victories; it is also the story of visionary leadership, institutional development, and selfless community service. Throughout the 1970s and the years that followed, Professor N. C. Parappa and his colleagues worked tirelessly to strengthen the club's infrastructure, expand opportunities for young players, and elevate the standards of physical education and basketball in Karnataka.
One of the most significant milestones in the club's history was the construction of an all-weather reinforced cement concrete (RCC) floodlit basketball court in 1975. Until then, the Devanga Union's basketball court had been a mud surface, making regular practice and competitions impossible during the rainy season. Recognising the need for a modern playing facility, Professor Parappa and the club's Executive Committee undertook the ambitious task of constructing one of Bengaluru's earliest floodlit basketball courts.
The project, which cost approximately ₹65,000, was made possible through generous contributions from club members, patrons, and well-wishers. An initial grant of ₹10,000 from the Lions Club of Bangalore (Host) provided the impetus for the project, while the remaining funds were raised through community support. This remarkable achievement reflected the collective commitment of the Devanga community to promoting sports and youth development.
The new basketball court was officially inaugurated on 12 September 1976 by Shri R. Gundu Rao, then Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Government of Karnataka. The inauguration marked a turning point in the history of the Devanga Union, providing players with a modern facility that enabled year-round coaching, competitive tournaments, and evening practice under floodlights. Nearly five decades later, the court continues to serve generations of basketball players, standing as a lasting symbol of the vision and dedication of its founders.
The national reputation of the Devanga Union continued to grow. In 1977, Shri Sikander Bakht, then Union Minister associated with sports and later India's Minister of External Affairs, visited the club. During his visit, he commended the Executive Committee for its outstanding contribution to the promotion of sports and physical education in Bengaluru. His appreciation recognised the Devanga Union as one of the country's exemplary community sports institutions.
Professor Parappa understood that the success of a sports club should not be measured solely by the achievements of its first team. Every talented player deserved an opportunity to compete and develop. As the popularity of basketball increased, the Devanga Union found itself with a growing number of skilled players competing for limited places in the senior team.
To address this challenge, Professor Parappa established two sister clubs, Bangalore Challengers and later Halasuru Sports Union. These clubs created additional opportunities for promising players to participate in tournaments conducted by the Karnataka State Basketball Association and other organisations. While Bangalore Challengers eventually ceased its activities, Halasuru Sports Union continues to uphold Professor Parappa's vision by providing opportunities for young basketball players and contributing to the development of the sport in Karnataka.
Beyond the basketball court, Professor Parappa distinguished himself as an outstanding academician and educational administrator. Throughout his career, he was widely respected for his integrity, scholarship, and unwavering commitment to physical education. As Principal of the Government College of Physical Education, and of University College of Physical Education Banglore University Bengaluru, he inspired generations of students to regard physical education as an essential component of holistic education and nation-building. His leadership helped elevate the professional standards of physical education in Karnataka and encouraged many students to pursue careers as teachers, coaches, and sports administrators.
Professor Parappa's contributions also earned international recognition. A particularly significant tribute came from Dr. Edward S. Steitz, President of the Basketball Federation of the United States of America and Director of Athletics at Springfield College. In a letter dated 26 January 1972, Dr. Steitz praised Professor Parappa's outstanding leadership in organising international basketball programmes, his pioneering efforts in raising the standard of basketball in Bengaluru and India, and his lifelong dedication to physical education. Coming from one of the world's foremost basketball authorities and a mentor who had known Professor Parappa personally, this recognition remains one of the highest honours bestowed upon an Indian basketball educator.
Over the course of his distinguished career, Professor Parappa received numerous prestigious awards in recognition of his exceptional service to education, sports, and society.
In 1980, he received the Harry C. Buck Award from the YMCA College of Physical Education, Chennai, for his outstanding contribution to physical education.
In 1994, he was honoured with the title "Devanga Ratna" by His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Dayananda Puri Mahaswamiji of Hemakoota Gayatri Peetha, Hampi, in recognition of his distinguished service to the Devanga community.
In 2001, the Government of Karnataka conferred upon him the prestigious Kannada Rajyotsava Award, the State's highest civilian honour, acknowledging his lifelong contribution to education, physical education, and sports development.
To perpetuate his memory and honour his extraordinary contribution to basketball, the Devanga Union Sports Club, in association with the Karnataka State Basketball Association, instituted the Professor N. C. Parappa Memorial Rolling Trophy. Awarded annually to the champions of the Karnataka State Basketball Association's First Division Basketball Championship, the trophy serves as a lasting tribute to a teacher, coach, administrator, and visionary who devoted his life to the advancement of basketball and physical education.
The achievements of Professor N. C. Parappa extended far beyond sporting success. Through his leadership, scholarship, and unwavering commitment to community service, he transformed the Devanga Union Sports Club into an institution that nurtured excellence, inspired generations, and enriched Karnataka's sporting heritage. His legacy continues to live on in every player trained on the Devanga Union court, every coach inspired by his philosophy, and every young sportsperson who believes that dedication, discipline, and service to society are the true foundations of sporting excellence.
As the Devanga Union entered a new era, it stood not merely as a successful basketball club but as a respected institution whose influence extended across education, community development, and Indian sport. The next chapter explores this enduring legacy and the lasting impact of Professor Parappa's vision on basketball in Bengaluru and Karnataka.
Chapter Eight
An Enduring Legacy
The true measure of a sporting institution is not merely the championships it wins or the number of outstanding athletes it produces, but the lasting impact it has on the lives of individuals and the community it serves. For more than eight decades, the Devanga Union Sports Club has exemplified these ideals. Through its unwavering commitment to sporting excellence, character building, and community service, it has become one of Bengaluru's most respected and enduring sporting institutions.
At the heart of this remarkable legacy stands Professor N. C. Parappa, whose influence extended far beyond the basketball court. Those who knew him remember not only an accomplished physical educationist, coach, and administrator, but also a humble mentor, compassionate teacher, and visionary leader. He possessed a rare ability to inspire confidence in young people, recognising their potential even before they recognised it in themselves. With patience, encouragement, and unwavering dedication, he transformed countless youngsters into disciplined athletes and responsible citizens.
Together with his wife, Smt. Sappe Sarojamma, Professor Parappa built a family founded on values of integrity, education, service, and compassion. Their home welcomed students, players, colleagues, and well-wishers, reflecting the same warmth and generosity that characterised his professional life. His enduring legacy continues through his family, former students, players, and the institutions he helped to strengthen.
Professor Parappa believed that every child deserved an opportunity to participate in sport. Rather than relying on material incentives, he motivated young people through personal encouragement, discipline, and genuine concern for their well-being. His approachable nature and unwavering belief in the abilities of every player created an environment in which young athletes developed confidence, resilience, and a lifelong passion for basketball. Many of those who trained under his guidance went on to represent Karnataka and India, while others became teachers, coaches, administrators, and respected professionals in various fields. Regardless of the careers they pursued, they carried with them the values of teamwork, perseverance, honesty, and service that he had instilled.
Although Professor Parappa gradually reduced his direct involvement in coaching Karnataka's representative teams after the mid-1960s, his commitment to basketball never diminished. Increasing academic responsibilities, educational leadership, and community service demanded much of his time, yet he remained deeply involved in nurturing young talent through school competitions, coaching camps, and the activities of the Devanga Union Sports Club. His influence continued to shape the direction of basketball in Bengaluru long after he stepped away from competitive coaching.
The extraordinary growth of basketball in Bengaluru during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s was the result of the collective efforts of visionary administrators, dedicated coaches, educational institutions, the YMCA, and community clubs such as the Devanga Union. Regular tournaments, disciplined coaching programmes, and healthy competition created an environment in which talented players could flourish. This vibrant sporting culture enabled Karnataka to emerge as one of India's leading basketball states.
However, from the 1990s onwards, basketball in Bengaluru experienced a gradual decline. The number of well-organised tournaments decreased, opportunities for competitive play became fewer, and changing lifestyles altered the sporting interests of younger generations. Employment opportunities in public sector undertakings, private companies, and institutions also drew many talented players away from traditional community clubs, affecting their long-term competitive strength.
Recognising these challenges, the Devanga Union remained steadfast in its commitment to youth development. To sustain interest in the game, the club introduced an Annual Summer Basketball Coaching Camp for schoolchildren. Conducted every year, the programme provides young boys and girls with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball under qualified coaches while developing discipline, teamwork, physical fitness, and self-confidence. For many participants, the summer camp has become the first step in their sporting journey and a continuation of the club's long-standing commitment to grassroots development.
The story of basketball in Cubbonpet is ultimately one of vision, perseverance, and community spirit. From a modest mud court emerged generations of exceptional players who proudly represented Mysore State, Karnataka, and India. Behind every success lay the collective efforts of dedicated administrators, coaches, volunteers, patrons, and families who believed that sport had the power to transform lives and strengthen society.
The contribution of Cubbonpet to the history of basketball in Karnataka is truly exceptional. Institutions such as Krishna Union and the Devanga Union Sports Club played pioneering roles in introducing, nurturing, and popularising the game during its formative years. Their achievements laid the foundation upon which Karnataka's rich basketball tradition was built.
Today, the Devanga Union Basketball Court remains one of the oldest surviving basketball courts in Karnataka. Situated in the heart of Bengaluru's historic Central Business District, it has witnessed generations of players chasing their dreams, countless hours of disciplined practice, memorable tournaments, and the evolution of basketball in Karnataka. More than a sporting facility, it is a living monument to dedication, voluntary service, and community participation.
The Devanga Union Sports Club represents far more than a basketball club. It is a symbol of Bengaluru's sporting heritage and an enduring example of how a community institution can shape lives through sport. Long before the establishment of modern sports academies and professional training centres, the club provided young people with opportunities to develop their talents, build character, and represent their State and nation with distinction. It has produced outstanding players, coaches, administrators, and physical education leaders whose contributions continue to enrich Indian sport.
In recognition of its extraordinary historical significance, the Devanga Union Sports Club deserves to be formally recognised as a Heritage Sporting Institution. Such recognition would honour the vision of its founders, preserve one of Bengaluru's oldest sporting landmarks, and acknowledge the invaluable contributions of generations of players, coaches, administrators, and volunteers. It would also reinforce Bengaluru's identity as a city with a rich and distinguished sporting tradition.
Preserving the Devanga Union is not merely about safeguarding a basketball court or an old clubhouse. It is about protecting an institution that has inspired generations, strengthened communities, and contributed immensely to the sporting history of Karnataka. A city that values its sporting heritage invests in its future. By preserving and celebrating institutions such as the Devanga Union Sports Club, Bengaluru will continue to inspire future generations of athletes, coaches, educators, and community leaders.
The enduring legacy of the Devanga Union lies not only in the trophies it has won or the players it has produced, but in the values it has upheld for more than 80th years, discipline, integrity, teamwork, service, and excellence. These timeless ideals continue to guide the club today and will undoubtedly inspire generations yet to come.
Chapter Nine
Training Under Professor N. C. Parappa: My Recollections
History is often told through records, photographs, and achievements. Yet the true spirit of an institution is best understood through the memories of those who experienced it firsthand. As one of the many young players fortunate enough to train under Professor N. C. Parappa, I consider it a privilege to share a few personal recollections of a remarkable teacher whose influence extended far beyond the basketball court.
My association with the Devanga Union Sports Club began during my school days. Like countless youngsters from Cubbonpet and the surrounding localities, I was drawn to the club by its vibrant sporting atmosphere and the reputation of Professor Parappa as an exceptional coach and mentor. Joining the club was not merely an opportunity to learn basketball; it was the beginning of an education in discipline, perseverance, and character.
Our training sessions commenced promptly at 6.00 a.m. Every player was expected to report on time, neatly dressed and mentally prepared for a demanding session. Punctuality was regarded as the first lesson in discipline. After reporting to Professor Parappa, we began with warm-up exercises, stretching, and conditioning drills before setting off on cross-country runs through the peaceful surroundings of Cubbon Park. Endurance training also included climbing the steps of the Vidhana Soudha, an exercise that tested both physical stamina and mental determination. Today, such training is no longer possible because the area has become a restricted zone, making those memories even more special.
After completing our physical conditioning, we returned to the basketball court for skill development and practice matches. Facilities in those days were modest compared with modern standards, but our enthusiasm more than compensated for the lack of sophisticated equipment. Since coloured jerseys were not readily available, players were divided into teams using simple cloth bands worn across the chest. Despite these humble arrangements, every practice session was conducted with the seriousness and intensity of a competitive match.
Professor Parappa believed that every practice session was an opportunity to learn. He observed each player closely, paying attention not only to technical skills but also to attitude, teamwork, and discipline. Following every practice and tournament, he patiently analysed our performances, offering constructive criticism and practical guidance. His corrections were firm yet encouraging, always aimed at helping us improve rather than discouraging us. He possessed a remarkable ability to identify each player's strengths and weaknesses and to inspire confidence through positive reinforcement.
Representing the Devanga Union Sports Club was every young player's dream. Competition for places in the senior team was intense because the club was home to many outstanding basketball players. Rather than allowing talented youngsters to become discouraged, Professor Parappa created additional opportunities by encouraging many of us to represent the Halasuru Sports Union, the sister club established under his guidance. This thoughtful initiative enabled younger players to gain valuable competitive experience in tournaments organised by the Karnataka State Basketball Association and other clubs, while continuing to develop their skills under his supervision.
Evenings at the Devanga Union Basketball Court remain among my most cherished memories. Under the floodlights, we watched senior players display exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork during practice sessions. Their stories of victories in state and national tournaments filled us with admiration and inspired us to dream of one day representing the Devanga Union, Karnataka, and perhaps even India. Those evenings nurtured not only our basketball abilities but also our aspirations.
One particularly memorable experience was representing Seshadripuram Junior College, Bengaluru, in the K. Gangadhar Memorial Basketball Tournament, organised by the Devanga Union under the auspices of the Lions Club of Bangalore (Host). Although our team did not progress far in the competition, the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious tournament remains one of the proudest moments of my youth. It reinforced my appreciation of the high standards maintained by the Devanga Union and the immense contribution the club made to school and collegiate basketball in Bengaluru.
Looking back, I realise that Professor Parappa taught us lessons that extended far beyond basketball. He believed that true success was measured not merely by victories on the court but by honesty, humility, discipline, respect for others, and service to society. Through his example, we learned to accept both victory and defeat with grace, to work tirelessly towards our goals, and to value teamwork above individual glory.
For many of us, Professor N. C. Parappa was more than a coach. He was a mentor, teacher, guide, and father figure whose influence shaped our lives in profound ways. The values he instilled continue to guide us long after our playing days have ended. Every time I visit the Devanga Union Basketball Court, memories of those early morning practices, demanding training sessions, inspiring conversations, and unforgettable friendships return with remarkable clarity.
I remain deeply grateful for having trained under one of Karnataka's finest physical educationists and basketball coaches. His legacy lives on not only through the trophies won and the players he produced, but also through the countless lives he touched with his wisdom, compassion, and unwavering belief in the transformative power of sport.
These recollections are offered with profound respect and gratitude to Professor N. C. Parappa, whose life's work continues to inspire generations of players, coaches, educators, and sports enthusiasts. His lessons remain timeless, and his legacy will forever be woven into the rich sporting heritage of Devanga Union Sports Club, Cubbonpet, and Karnataka basketball.
Chapter Ten
Professor N. C. Parappa Centenary Year: A Living Legacy
The celebration of the Birth Centenary of Professor N. C. Parappa (1927–2027) marked a historic milestone in the annals of physical education and basketball in Karnataka. More than a commemoration of one individual's life, it became a celebration of a remarkable legacy that transformed the landscape of sports, education, and community service over several decades.
The Professor N. C. Parappa Centenary Year was inaugurated on 7 January 2026 at the G. B. Hall, Karnataka State Secretariat Club, Cubbon Park, Bengaluru, in the presence of distinguished sportspersons, physical educationists, former players, coaches, administrators, academicians, family members, and well-wishers. The year-long celebrations, concluding on 20 January 2027, served as a fitting tribute to a visionary teacher, coach, administrator, and mentor whose contributions continue to inspire generations.
The inaugural function was not merely a ceremonial occasion; it was a gathering of people whose lives had been shaped by Professor Parappa's guidance. Former students recalled his inspiring classroom lectures, players spoke of his disciplined coaching methods, colleagues remembered his integrity and professionalism, while members of the sporting fraternity reflected on his lifelong commitment to youth development and social service. Together, these memories painted the portrait of a man whose influence extended far beyond the basketball court.
As part of the centenary celebrations, the Devanga Union Sports Club, in association with the Karnataka State Basketball Association, organised the Professor N. C. Parappa Centenary Men's State-Level Invitation Basketball Tournament in June 2026. The tournament brought together leading teams from across Karnataka, providing young players with an opportunity to compete in an event dedicated to one of the State's greatest basketball pioneers.
The tournament symbolised much more than sporting competition. It reaffirmed the enduring values that Professor Parappa championed throughout his life, discipline, teamwork, integrity, leadership, sportsmanship, and service to society. Every match played during the tournament reflected the philosophy that had guided his coaching career: that sport is a powerful instrument for building character and creating responsible citizens.
The centenary year also provided an opportunity to reflect upon Professor Parappa's immense contribution to physical education. As an educator, he inspired generations of students to recognise the importance of physical fitness and lifelong learning. As a coach, he developed players who represented Karnataka and India with distinction. As an administrator, he strengthened sporting institutions and organised competitions that promoted basketball throughout the State. As a community leader, he demonstrated how voluntary service and collective effort could transform lives.
Equally important was the renewed recognition of the historic contribution of the Devanga Union Sports Club. The centenary celebrations highlighted the club's pioneering role in the growth of basketball in Bengaluru and Karnataka, reminding younger generations that many of the State's finest players, coaches, and administrators began their sporting journeys on the Devanga Union basketball court.
The publication of this book, Basketball: From Springfield to Cubbonpet (Bengaluru), forms an integral part of the centenary celebrations. It seeks not only to document the history of basketball but also to preserve the remarkable story of the individuals, institutions, and communities whose dedication shaped the game in Karnataka. By recording these achievements, the book aims to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the rich sporting heritage that has often remained undocumented.
Professor Parappa often believed that "a teacher's greatest achievement is not measured by personal success, but by the success of those whom he inspires." His life perfectly exemplified this philosophy. The thousands of students he taught, the players he coached, the institutions he strengthened, and the lives he influenced stand as his greatest achievements and his most enduring memorial.
Today, as Bengaluru continues to evolve into a global city, preserving its sporting heritage has become more important than ever. Institutions such as the Devanga Union Sports Club, together with the contributions of pioneers like Professor N. C. Parappa, deserve recognition as an integral part of the city's cultural and sporting history. Their stories remind us that lasting institutions are built through vision, dedication, voluntary service, and the collective efforts of committed individuals.
The centenary celebrations therefore represent not an end, but a new beginning. They call upon present and future generations to preserve the traditions established by the pioneers, strengthen community sports institutions, encourage greater participation in physical activity, and uphold the timeless values that Professor Parappa embodied throughout his life.
As this book reaches its conclusion, one truth becomes unmistakably clear: the legacy of Professor N. C. Parappa cannot be measured merely by trophies, championships, or awards. His true legacy lives on in every young player inspired to pursue excellence, every teacher who promotes physical education with dedication, every coach who places character above victory, and every community that believes sport has the power to unite, inspire, and transform society.
More than a century after his birth, Professor N. C. Parappa continues to guide and inspire through the lives he touched, the institutions he nurtured, and the ideals he championed. His legacy remains a beacon for future generations, ensuring that the spirit of Devanga Union Sports Club, the history of Cubbonpet basketball, and the values of sportsmanship, service, and excellence will continue to flourish for many years to come.
Epilogue
From a modest gymnasium in Springfield in 1891 to the vibrant basketball courts of Cubbonpet, this has been a journey spanning continents, cultures, and generations. It is a story of visionaries, dedicated teachers, committed volunteers, and extraordinary athletes who believed in the transformative power of sport.
May this book serve as a tribute to those pioneers, preserve an important chapter in Karnataka's sporting heritage, and inspire future generations to uphold the ideals of discipline, teamwork, integrity, and service that have defined the remarkable legacy of Devanga Union Sports Club and Professor N. C. Parappa.
Chapter Eleven
Conclusion: Preserving a Proud Sporting Heritage
The history of basketball in Bengaluru is a story of vision, dedication, and community spirit. From its invention by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, to its introduction in India through the YMCA, and its remarkable growth in Cubbonpet, basketball has inspired generations of players, coaches, administrators, and sports enthusiasts.
Among the institutions that shaped this journey, the Devanga Union occupies a unique place in the sporting history of Karnataka. Since its establishment on 15 August 1946, the club has served as far more than a basketball institution. It has been a centre for youth development, physical education, leadership, and community service. Through decades of voluntary effort and unwavering commitment, it has produced outstanding sportspersons who have represented Karnataka and India with distinction.
No account of this remarkable journey would be complete without acknowledging the extraordinary contribution of Professor N. C. Parappa. As a teacher, coach, administrator, and visionary, he transformed the lives of countless young people. His philosophy extended beyond winning championships; he believed that sport should cultivate discipline, integrity, teamwork, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to service. His influence continues to be reflected in the achievements of his students, players, and colleagues, as well as in the institutions he helped to build.
The story presented in this book also highlights the invaluable role played by community organisations in the development of Indian sport. Long before professional academies and modern training centres emerged, clubs such as the Devanga Union relied on the dedication of volunteers, the generosity of patrons, and the enthusiasm of local communities to nurture sporting talent. Their achievements demonstrate that lasting success is built upon collective effort, shared responsibility, and a common vision.
As Bengaluru continues to expand as a global city, preserving its sporting heritage becomes increasingly important. Historic institutions such as the Devanga Union Sports Club, together with landmarks like Banappa Park, deserve recognition as part of the city's cultural and sporting legacy. Protecting these institutions is not merely about preserving buildings or playing courts; it is about honouring the pioneers whose dedication laid the foundations for generations of sporting excellence.
It is hoped that this book will encourage historians, researchers, students, sports administrators, and policymakers to undertake further research into the history of basketball in Karnataka and India. Much remains to be documented, and preserving these stories is essential for inspiring future generations.
Above all, this book is a tribute to every player who wore the Devanga Union colours with pride, every coach who selflessly shared knowledge, every administrator who worked behind the scenes, every patron who supported the club, and every volunteer who believed in the transformative power of sport. Their collective efforts have created a legacy that continues to enrich the sporting heritage of Bengaluru.
As we look towards the future, may the ideals that guided the pioneers of the Devanga Union, discipline, sportsmanship, integrity, teamwork, excellence, and service, continue to inspire young people to pursue both sporting achievement and responsible citizenship.
The story of basketball in Cubbonpet is far from over. Every bounce of the ball on the historic Devanga Union court carries forward a tradition that began generations ago. It is a legacy entrusted to today's players and tomorrow's leaders, a legacy that must be preserved, strengthened, and celebrated for generations to come.
