Forgotten Silk Merchants of Bangalore City - Part 05

Before the establishment of Karnataka State's Silk Exchange, our weavers had to purchase pure Silk filature Yarns for weaving purposes from private merchants which was dominated by Arya Vysyas community members, and in this exclusive group few devangas merchants were functioning as equals.

One such Devanga was Late G C Lokesh, who was a manufacturer and a silk Merchant in Cubbonpet Bengaluru

              Late Gante Chikkanna Lokesh

In the 1960s he set G C Lokesh and Co which supplied weavers of untwisted pure Silk Filature Yarns across the state and country.

He remembered for manufacturing high quality pure silk fabrics, which was patronized by then former chief minister late D. Devaraj Urs and his colleagues.

Late G C Lokesh was a political activist, who was elected as Bangalore's City Municipality Council member for one term in 1970s, unfortunately the State government had superceded the Municipality Council for ten years when the election was held in 1981 he was not successful for the second time.

It is said that Late G C Lokesh and associates was instrumental in the successful election of Late K M Naganna former President of Devanga Sangha as Chickpet assembly constituency legislator for two terms in the 1970s.

Late G C Lokesh was elected as Secretary of Devanga Sangha Bengaluru in 1970s, on assumption he upgraded the Sangha's hostel facilities for our community's outstation
students, and even today former hostel students appreciate his efforts.

When it's members of Devanga Sangha decided to consolidate our community's aspirations. The management committee lead by Sangha's President Late K M Naganna hosted our community's first conference for which he was it's organizing secretary.

Late G C Lokesh was associated in many institutions and societies of our community, such as Textile cooperative Bank Ltd, and Sri Vinayaka Education society Bengaluru, but he will be remembered especially for improving opportunities for sportsmen in Karnataka in the capacity as President of Deccan Athletic Sports Club a premier sports organization.

We would like his descendants to replicate his achievements as a Silk merchant, as his children are no longer associated with textiles.
