Forgotten Silk Merchants Of Bangalore City -Part 06


Silk Merchants and Weavers are two sides of a coin, and between 1920s to 1980s, their fortunes was interlinked to each other's.

Silk Merchants Of Bangalore City devoted their efforts in purchasing and selling pure silk filature yarns to weavers for weaving purposes.

            Late Y H Venkataramanappa 

Late Y H Venkataramanappa was a silk merchant whose forefathers were weavers. He purchased Pure Silk filature Yarns from sericulture farms, and sold it to weavers across the state and country.

Along with his sons and brother Late Y H Kempanna, he set up a shop which was situated on Avenue Road, Bengaluru.

Late Y H Venkataramanappa was elected as Bangalore city municipality' council member, during his tenure as it's member after witnessing the pathetic conditions of fellow Bangaloreons. He commenced a campaign of social welfare initiatives that changed lives of ordinary people, for his efforts, he was honoured by then Mysore Maharaja with a title of 'Samaja Seva Dhureena'.

Late Y H Venkataramanappa along with fellow devangas created numerous institutions for our community, and was it's patron member for many years.

He was elected as the President of Devanga Sangha Bengaluru, he is remembered for developments that was appreciated by it's members.

Subsequently after many decades his son Late Y V Venkatappa was elected as Devanga Sangha's President, which is unique in our community's  institutions.

To solve the scarcity of a choultry in Bangalore City for marriage purposes of our community people he constructed one and along with it  renovated a temple  dedicated Lord Anjaneya. The choultry he constructed is known as Samaja Seva Dhureena Y H Venkataramanappa's Kalyana Mantapa which is situated on Palace Road, Bengaluru.

To satisfy the lack of facilities for our community's sportsman, he along with patrons, and devangas of Cubbonpet formed the famous Devanga Union Sports Club in 1946, which is situated on K G Road Bengaluru.

Today one's educational achievements is sufficient for a job but in the 1960s and 70s, a letters of recommendation from a well-known personality of the City was common, and Late Y H Venkataramanappa used to give recommendation letters to people, and one such letter was given to my Late father Prof N C Parappa.

We would like his descendants to replicate his achievements as a silk merchant and philanthropist.
