World Organ Donation Day.

13th August every year is World Organ Donation Day and it's purpose is to motivate us to donate the organs as well as to understand the value of organ donation in the life of an individual.
Today, there are over millions of people worldwide are on the organ transplant waiting list hoping for a life-extending donation. Unfortunately, many people on this list die each year waiting for an organ. Despite lifesaving transplants last year, there is still a significant shortage of donors.
To help bridge this gap in supply and demand it requires to motivate donors, and clearing misconceptions about Organ Donation Seven organs that can be donated are: Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Heart, Lung, and Intestines.
The two organs that are needed most frequently are kidneys and livers. About 83 percent of the people on the waiting list are waiting for kidney transplants and about 12 percent are waiting for liver transplants.
One donor alone can save or drastically improve the lives of eight or more people, and donations don't always have to occur postmortem. Living donation serves as a viable option, especially in cases of kidney and liver transplantation, and saves the life of both the recipient and the next person on the waiting list.
People of all ages and background can be organ donors. If you are under age 18, your parent or guardian must give you permission to become a donor. If you are 18 or older you can express  your interest of organ donation by completing the formalities as prescribed by Government of India.
According to Indian law, it is your next of kin who will decide whether to donate your organs or not upon death. Even if you have pledged your organs, no donation will happen unless the next of kin gives their consent. Therefore, when you pledge to be an organ donor, it's very important that you discuss your wish to donate with your family.  This is to enable your family to carry out your wishes in case the need arises.
India has its own organ donation day that is observed on November 27 each year. On this day, the government encourages Indian citizens to volunteer to donate their organs and save lives.
"The measure of life is not its duration, but its donation."
