ಯಜ್ಞೋಪವೀತ: ಪವಿತ್ರ ದಾರ ಸಮಾರಂಭ.
Yajnopavita consists of two words, yajno and upavit. Vit means that which is woven, that is cloth and upavit means the upper garment. It is hand spun cotton thread worn across the chest resting on the left shoulder. Yajnopavita is mentioned as Janeu as per Upanayana Samskar, first Yajnopavita is performed to bring person to his father Gotra and then Upanayana ceremony is done to initiate teaching of Veda and teaching started with Gayathri Mantra.
This ceremony is essential for our community, as it marks an individual's acceptance as a Devanga.
At this point he becomes twice-born. Everyone has a first, biological birth, but when a young man seeks his spiritual identity he symbolically accepts a spiritual teacher as father and the Vedas as mother.
Significance and Correct usage of Janeu:
It is not a ordinary thread, its sanctity is regarded to get disturbed if it is not worn properly.
To attend or perform any auspicious ceremony, one should wear janeu hanging from the left shoulder.
For attending or performing inauspicious event, one should wear janeu hanging from the right shoulder.
In case the person wears janeu round the neck like a garland, then, he is called as Niviti.
While going for daily ablutions or doing impure tasks, the holy thread must be raised and its upper part ought to be put behind ear.
Males and females both can wear janeu, yet females should wear it around the neck.
In the event of birth or death in the family, janeu should be removed and again a new thread ought to be worn after 15 days of event.
One must replace the old or broken thread with a new thread.
The three strands of Janeo, and it's significance have been analysed by different spiritual personalities regarding this custom and tradition.
To the practitioners of Sanatan Dharma, the three strands stand for the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It's also interpreted as Mahasarasvati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali
Generations have struggled to learn, despite efforts to eliminate our traditions and language. Having a strong sense of yourself and your community is a great foundation for learning.
