Legal and Financial Planning for People with Alzheimer's and Dementia.
Many people are unprepared to deal with the legal and financial consequences of a serious illness such as Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.
Altruism in old age may not be a sign of generosity later in life, but instead a warning that a loved one is suffering from dementia, a new study finds.
Alzheimer's and Bouts of Generosity:
Researchers have found that elderly people that were more willing to give away money to a person they do not know perform worse of cognitive exams and are more at risk for Alzheimer's.
The research connects the generally lauded behavior of altruism to a serious medical condition, and could serve as a warning to friends and relatives
Elderly people have long been known to be more vulnerable to scams and attempts to extract money from them because of their declined mental state, but this study shows that even positive examples could signal some danger.
Trouble handling money is thought to be one of the early signs of Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers found that some older people whose brain's were in a worse state were more likely to give money to a stranger
They warn that family and caretakers of an elderly person should be worried if they are suddenly more altruistic
Researchers warn that people should be on the lookout for these sudden changes of behavior, and not just assume that their loved one has suddenly become more generous in older age.
Many older adults will be suspicious of attempts to take over their financial affairs.
You can help the person with Alzheimer’s feel independent by:
1.Giving him or her small amounts of cash or cancelled cheques.
2.Minimizing the spending limit on credit cards or debit cards that are cancelled.
3.Informing the person that it is important to learn about finances, with his or her help
4.To prevent serious problems, you may have to take charge of the person’s financial affairs through legal arrangements. It’s important to handle the transfer of financial authority with respect and understanding.
5.You ought to get consent to manage the person’s finances via a power of attorney for finances, preferably while the person can still understand and approve the arrangement
"Humanity is the virtue of a woman, generosity that of a man."
