Sri Gayatri Peeta and Devanga Jagadgurus.
The Indian Caste System is historically one of the main dimensions where people in India are socially differentiated through class, religion, region, tribe, gender, and language.
Although this or other forms of differentiation exist in all human societies, it becomes a problem when one or more of these dimensions overlap each other and become the sole basis of systematic ranking and unequal access to valued resources like wealth, income, power and prestige.
The Indian Caste System is considered a closed system of stratification, which means that a person’s social status is obligated to which caste they were born into. There are limits on interaction and behavior with people from another social status.
The caste system is a classification of people into four hierarchically ranked castes called varnas. Anthropologists have divided Hindus on caste lines with reference to food, gods, time, animals, and even seasons.
We Devangas derive our existence from Sri Devala Maharishi an avatar of the God’s and the creator of art of weaving and covered the modesty of God’s and humans.
Devanga Purana was first composed in the 10th century subsequently it was translated into various languages. In my opinion it requires codification and a authenticated version to be used by all sections of our community.
Our forefathers migrated to different parts of country establishing settlements which later formed the core of numerous cities and towns.
Just like any other communities our forefathers formulated customs and practices, every successive centuries it was modified to their environment today it’s our heritage and lifestyle.
During the Vijayanagar empire our community's important religious institution the Sri Gayatri Peeta and the office of Devanga Jagadguru was set up with successive emperors patronizing Sri Gayatri Peeta at Hampi Karnataka.
The Lineage of Devanga Jagadguru Gurus:
1.Sri Muddusanga Swamy. 1371-1464.
2.Sri Muddusanga Swamy. 1464-1550.
3.Sri Muddusanga Swamy 1550-1646.
4.Sri Durvasamuni Swamy. 1646-1694.
5.Sri Muddusanga Swamy. 1694-1779
6.Sri Dayananda Puri Swamy. 1990
Devanga Jagadgurus provide our community with spiritual guidance and Sri Gayatri Peeta is the centre of learning.
Only in early 1920s formal institutions such as Devanga Sangha, Devanga Bank and Weavers’s co op societies were set up in Bangalore.
We lacks critical information about the migration and formations of Devangas as a community, while on the other hand evolution of brahmins and certain communities have been documented.
"History is the interpretation of the significance that the past has for us."
Jai Devanga.
