Devara Dasimayya Vachanakara and Social Reformer.
According to Devanga Purana, Devara Dasimayya a social reformer, vachanakaara, patron guru of our community, weaver, and avatar of Devala Maharshi.
On 6th of April 2022 we celebrate the Jayanti of Devara Dasimayya a vachanakaara par excellence and his vachanas focused on the concept of sincere work and critical response to superfluous, devotion, deception, discrimination based on gender, shallowness of religious institutions.
I would like to emphasize his contributions to society, and how his vachanas transformed the course of Indian history, and impacting the bhakti movement of the 11th century.
Vachana are quotes which have enriched medieval Kannada literarary traditions because of its content and form, originated from the bhakti movement of the 11th century.
Vachanas importance are similar to Upanishads, and are key instrumental in bringing socio economic transformation under the leadership of .Devara Dasimayya
The main purpose of Vachanas was to bring a social upliftment of the poor and down-trodden along with religious awakening. The main significance of Vachanas was to bring a social upliftment of the poor and down-trodden along with religious awakening.
Vachana movement gained momentum just not because of its innovative simple Kannada but for its strong voice of protest against exploitations in the society. Vachanas honoured dignity of labour, vegetarianism, non-violence, equality between men and women in all respects, treated all profession with great respect; their motto was work is worship.
Vachanas highlighted Hindusim for exploited the untouchables and weaker sections for centuries in the name of religion.
It is important to note that Vachanakaras don't think themselves as poets but these vachanas are spontaneous overflow of feelings. They may lack literary qualities but they melodious flowing in rendering made them great in literature proverbs, in colloquial language.
The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean; not to affect your reader, but to affect him precisely as you wish.
Vachana of Devara Dasimayya
You have kept fire in tree
in such a way that it does not burn.
You have kept melted butter in foamy milk
in such a way that its fragrance is hidden.
You have kept soul in body
in such a way that it is not seen by any .
Lord
I am amazed at the
way you fuse the differences
O Ramanatha.
